Appearance

The length ranges from seven to nine inches. The fish found in African region is smaller in size which is about 4 inches in length.

Color

Except for the African butterfly fish, which are dull, most species of butterfly fish are bright in color. They possess multicolored swirls and stripes covering their whole body. Most of them have bright colored scales which come in hues of red blue, orange, white, black and yellow. Butterfly fish needs more care and attention. It is suggested to buy two or more of them at a time. This will make them comfortable in an aquarium and will enhance their healthy growth.

When you get the fish in a bag from the store, do not immediately pour in the bag containing fish. Before releasing the bag in the aquarium, add a few tablespoons of tank water in the bag. Continue to add tank water in the bag for next one hour. This will help the fish to adjust to the new water temperature and will save them from getting water shock which can cause death. Transfer the butterfly fish from the bag to the tank with the help of a fish net. Avoid pouring the bag directly into the tank as there are chances of the fungi or foreign bacteria getting transferred into the tank.
