Fish FungusFungus is the most common problem encountered by the aquarium fish. It may be seen as the grey or white cottony patches which may appear on any part of fish whether it is fins or tail. Sometimes you may see that a part of your fish’s tail is rotting and gradually disappearing in a few days-it is the clear indication that your fish is under fungal attack! It is very important to treat fish fungus in the early stages as it grows rapidly and will kill your dear fish even before you know! You certainly won’t like your prized possessions to be under any sort of danger and even though you have just finished cleaning you fish tank this article is a must read for all you fish lovers.

HOW DOES A FUNGUS LOOK LIKE? :

  1. MOUTH FUNGUS: This type of fish fungus also called columnaris is off white to grey in color and is caused by bacterium ‘Havobacterium columnare’.

  2. GREY FUNGUS: Its symptoms are light grey cottony patches on any part of fish’s body. It is basically a parasitic fungus. Fungus guard or Ich guard can be used for its treatment.

  3. WHITE FUNGUS: Its symptoms are white cottony patches on any part of fish’s body. It is caused by bacteria and can be treated if caught in early stages. It can be treated with fungus guard and fungus eliminator.

CAUSES OF FISH FUNGUS:

  1. Rough handling of fishes may cause their outer skin to peel off thus making it vulnerable to the attack of fungus.

  2. Open wounds of fish like Ich and hole-in-the-head can also lead to fish fungus.

  3. Poor and dirty water conditions in which the fish is living.

  4. If the temperature is kept too low it may lead to fungal attack.

PREVENTIVE MEASURES:

  1. Use of tea tree oil.
  2. Use of salt in moderate quantities.
  3. Giving less feed to the fishes

TREATMENT OF FISH FUNGUS:

  1. The most popular ones are Copper Safe by Mardel laboratories as it also helps in improving the appetite of fish and other is Maroxy again by Mardel.

  2. You can use Malachite green which is an organic dye but it must not be used if you have stingrays, mormyrids in your tank. It is also harmful to shrimps and snails.

  3. You can also use combination of malachite green and formalin which will treat both fungal and bacterial pathogens but this treatment should be carried out with care and moderation.

  4. Fungus guard and fungus eliminator.

AFFECT OF FUNGUS ON FISH:

Fungus severely affects the unfertilized eggs and if not treated on time can rapidly spread to fertilized ones too.

Bala sharks are those species which are more prone to be killed by fungal attack while other types can handle it well.

Fish fungus is the common fish disease which is caused to the aquarium fishes. Fungus infections are caused mainly on the exposed skin tissues. An injury that is caused due to rough handling of fish, or fighting in between the fishes can lead to open wounds which are degradation of the upper protective skin. Later, the skin gets various fungal infections, which can be caused due to the anchor worm attack.

If these infections are not treated, then they can easily spread to other body parts, resulting into more serious health conditions. The fungal infection looks like the cotton wool lump, which can be dangerous and cause death if it is not treated. Apart from skin areas, the fungal infections can occur on the gills of the fishes. As the fungus has the tendency to spread fast, it causes the gill tissues to die and due to this, the fish is unable to breathe.
