Fish Health Maintenance

All of us get ill at some time or the other and the same holds true for a fish. We take great care to keep our fish healthy and happy yet their health is a major concern for us. When the fish gets seriously ill, it becomes very essential to get the correct information about their disease. We are providing here some of the very basic facts which you must know about fish health maintenance .

Following these basic things will help your fish to stay away from various diseases.

Using salt: Using salt has proved to be beneficial in curing various parasitic and nitrite poisoning problems in fishes. Ordinary salt is being used as a medicine in fish aquariums which helps the fishes in improving gill function besides healing their injuries. Before you jump to grab salt for your fish just wait and read this—some species of fishes are not able to tolerate salt and if there are organic plants in your aquarium then using salt can be fatal for them so use salt carefully.
You can use ordinary salt but best is rock salt or kosher salt as they are pure and without any additives. Salt can be used when there is nitrite poisoning in your tank, it can also be used if your fish has been attacked by parasites but scaleless fishes should not be treated with salt or they will die. Similarly if you have kept some organic plants for your fishes then also salt should not be used.

Salt Treatment: There are basically two ways of ‘salt treating’ your fishes—Dip and bath. Dip Treatment—In this treatment you would require to segregate your ill fish from tank and dip it in salty water and watch closely.

Here is the procedure—
  1. Take a clean bucket .
  2. Put 4 tablespoon salt in it.
  3. Take 1 gallon water from aquarium.
  4. Mix the salt and water.
  5. Now put the fish in it and observe.
  6. If the fish looks lethargic and uncomfortable put it back at once.
  7. If the fish looks normal it can be kept in the bucket for 5-25 min.

Bath treatment—This type of treatment is used when the entire tank is to be treated. It is very useful in treating the stress related problems in fishes and treating nitrite poisoning.

Here is the procedure—
  1. Measure 1 tsp of salt for every gallon.
  2. Put it in a small container.
  3. Take small amount of water from fish tank and mix both.
  4. When the salt has dissolved put the mixture in the tank.
  5. The cleaning of the tank should be done like before.
  6. Do not add extra salt after cleaning the tank.

Following are the symptoms of sick fish:

  1. Lethargic
  2. Jumping too much.
  3. Nibbing or flashing
  4. Gasping at the surface
  5. Isolating themselves.

Following are the tests you can do:

  1. Check their behavior over last few weeks which may suggest parasitic attack.
  2. Check if your tank size is adequate for the stock you have stuffed in. Is it too small for them?
  3. Are the problems affecting all the fishes or just a few.
  4. You can also carry out water purifying tests like pH, ammonia and nitrite tests.
  5. Closely examine filter, algae growth or solid wastes which may indicate pollution sources.

Diseases: Fin and tail rot, mouth fungus, ick are some of the common problems found in fishes. It is very essential to diagnose the disease and then follow the treatment procedure accordingly.

Thus we have discussed all the basic things required for good fish health maintenance .
