Food for Fish When You Have None

There are three things to be aware of when feeding fish: the quantity of food to give, at what level fish feed, and what they eat. As to quantity, the best way of getting the amount right is to feed as much as your fish will eat in five minutes, and until you are sure how much that is going to be, start with a little and see how long that takes to eat, then add some more, and so on. When you have discovered that it takes three lots of a quarter of a teaspoon you know next time that you can feed three quarters of a teaspoonful in one go. If you feed too little your fish are not suddenly going to float upside down to the surface - they will just be a little hungry. If you feed too much, once again they will not die, but the uneaten food will sink to the bottom and may start to pollute the tank .Excess pollution will kill the fish, but if you discover that you have inadvertently put too much food in the tank you will have time to clean out the whole system. Try feeding your fish in the morning and in the evening. If you are going on holiday, feed them well for a couple of weeks in advance and they will not come to any harm being left on their own for a few days. If you need to leave neighbor in charge of your fish, divide up the food into daily packets and leave instructions that only one packet a day must be fed. If you have a pond in the garden, and it has been set up properly so that a good community of plants and animals exists, then you ought to have no need to add food.

Some species of fish feed at the surface, some at different levels in the volume of water, and some at the bottom, so you will need to choose a food that satisfies the fishes' requirements. As to what they eat, some fish are herbivorous, some are carnivorous handsome are pretty well omnivorous. Some people resent their herbivorous species eating plants in the aquarium, but if you use lots of plants rather than the three or four that you see in most aquaria, and regard the expense of lost plants as part of your food bill, you will not feel so bad about it and your fish will feel happier.here are all sorts of basic fish foods available that will fulfil most of your pets' requirements and, provided that you choose food appropriate to the feeding level of your fish, you can select what you like. Some pellets sink straight to the bottom, some sink slowly and some foods, like the multicolored flakes, sit on the top for a while until they become waterlogged and then they slowly sink. What is crucial to fish is the size of the food particles. This basic diet can be supplemented by all sorts of scraps of food, cutup into suitably tiny lumps, such as cheese, fresh vegetables, fish and meat.

Commercial foods and household scraps are all very well but your fish will be delighted if you feed them suitably sized aquatic, but if you sweep for it in pond, check that no predatory beasts like dragonfly larvae are hidden amongst the Daphnia. Live food is great for fish, not only in nutritional terms, but because it gives the fish something to do since they have to hunt for it. A good portion of live food tipped into the tank before you go on holiday will keep the fish going for a couple of days.

Very tiny, newly hatched fish are best started off on infusoria and small Brine Shrimp, and as they grow they will learn to take some of the other items. But watch theparents, as many of them will eat small fish with the same gustowith which they will eat Daphnia.
