Combtail Paradise Fish Information

  • The comb tailed paradise fish is also popularly known as the Combtail Gouram, Ceylon combtail or simply combtail.
  • The fish has pale pigmentation of yellow orange along with a reddish tinge at the outline of the scales. A very marked pigmentation is of the presence of a dark speck at the dorsal fin located close to the body.
  • The fish is a type of labyrinth breed of fish. It has gills as well as breathing organs that help the fish breathe directly from the air.
  • Since the fish has special breathing adaptations enabling the fish to breathe both in water and air, the fish is mainly found in the upper layers of the water which is close in contact with the air.
  • Arrange for a tank of water that holds almost 30 gallons of water for the proper survival of the fish. The tank must be decorated with well planted trees so that the fish gets enough amount of space to hide. The fish mainly finds its common hiding places amidst roots of the water plants. Apart from good hiding places the fish also requires ample space to swim around freely.
  • You should also be selective about the breeds of fish that you would like to keep along with the combtail paradise fish. “Due to the boisterous nature of the fish you would find the fish to be getting along with larger species of species like the Kissing Gourami and the Cichlids.
  • It would be quite difficult to differentiate between the male and female specie of the breed. If minutely examined the male fish would be seen having an external dorsal fin. One should also be equipped enough to increase or decrease the temperature of the tank for the comfort of the fish. In order to promote spawning of the fish the level of water of the tank is expected to be decreased while the temperature must be increased.
  • While spawning the fish mainly lays its eggs under a soft plant leaf.
The fish is not a typical bubble builder but often the male builds up a one single bubble. The fry of the fish can easily swim on their own with in the six days of their birth. In order to successfully rear the fry one is advised to feed the fry with brine shrimp.
