Festive Cichlid Information

  • The fish prefers to stay in a well planted aquarium just like most of the gouramis. If well kept the fish can grow quite large as their average size is about 7 inches.
  • The fish is not ideal for community fish tank as the get aggressive often.
  • The fish will get along with Amazon cichlids and discus, especially wild discus.
  • The fish should be given a diet of variety. The fish owner should be careful while selecting the diet of the fish as if the diet is not health the fish might suffer from the disease called HLLE or Head and Lateral Line Erosion.
  • The fish is quite popular among aquarists because of its beautiful coloration.
  • The fish can be quite troublesome for other fish if kept in small tank due to its aggressive nature. But if kept in a large tank with other easily aggressive species the fish may not be bothersome for the aquarists. The fish is also known to be aggressive towards its own species.
  • As a common aquarium tank mate the angel fish can often be the ideal one for the fish.
  • The fish should be kept in a large and as well as in a well planted tank providing the fish ample space to hide. You should be careful while choosing the water plants for decorating the tank. The fish has the habit of nibbling the plants and punching holes in the leaves. Sometimes it would give minimal opportunity to allow the plants to grow. So always make sure of buying tough water plants or plastic plants that can be hardy enough to withstand the attack of the fish.
  • The pigmentation of the fish consists of the silver gray color along with white stripes. The fish is striped by a single black line that extends from the mouth, eyes and the all along the body.
  • The sex of the fish can be easily identified as the male fish grows quite large in size than the female counterpart. They also have a bump their head. They grow quite fast and get matured quite early than the female breeds. The fins of the male fish are quite longer in size.
The fish can be easily taken care of. They prefer to stay in slightly acidic form of water with ph levels in between 6.2 to 7.5. The temperature of the waters should be around in between 73 and 77 degrees Fahrenheit. Their diet should include vegetable matters like the peas, lettuce, zucchini and spinach. The live foods may include blood worms, live fish, brine shrimp, glass worms, tubex worms. The fish accepts frozen food items as well.
