Lyretail Lamprologus
COMMON NAME: Lyretail Lamprologus.
SCIENTIFIC NAME: Lamprologus brichardi.
DESIGNATION: Tropical.
GEOGRAPHICAL DISTRIBUTION: LakeTanganyika.
SIZE: Around 10 cm (4 in).
WATER PREFERENCES: Medium to hard,alkaline water between 23-28°C (73.5-82°F).
DIET: Most foods, particularly livefoods.
BREEDING: Eggs are laid in a cavity and areprotected by both parents which also guardthe fry. The eggs can take up to eight days tohatch and can look infertile (cloudy) duringthis time.
DESCRIPTION: L. brichardi andthe other popular species, L. leleupi, arepetricolous spawners (they spawn on a rocksurface). Other species such as L. tetracanthusspawn in depressions excavated in thesubstratum, i.e. they are arenicolous, whilestill others, e.g. L. ornatipinnis, spawn insideshells. These are said to be ostracophiles.
All Lamprologus species are aggressive to agreater or lesser extent when they reachadulthood.
