Orange Goodeid
COMMON NAMES: Orange or Red-tailedGoodeid.
SCIENTIFIC NAME: Xenotoca eiseni.
SYNONYM: Characodon eiseni.
DESIGNATION: Tropical, but can withstandtemperatures at the lower end of the tropicalscale and the upper end of the coldwater one.
GEOGRAPHICAL DISTRIBUTION: Northwest andsoutheast Mexico.
SIZE: Males up to around 7.5 cm (3 in);females around 10 cm (4 in).
WATER PREFERENCES: Not critical but alkaline, medium-hard conditions arepreferred. Temperature range 20-29°C(70-84°F).
DIET: Will accept most foods but requires aregular vegetable supplement.
BREEDING: As in Ameca splendens but X.eiseni is often more cannibalistic towards itsoffspring.
DESCRIPTION: Mature malesdevelop a pronounced hump which gives thema most impressive appearance. Being atypical Goodeid species, Xenotoca eiseni feedsits embryos by means of trophotaeniae whichare almost completely reabsorbed by the timethe fry are born.A second, slimmer and less colourful, butnevertheless very attractive, species ofXenotoca, X. variata, is also occasionallyavailable.
