Pygmy Sunfish
COMMON NAME: Pygmy Sunfish.
SCIENTIFIC NAME: Elassoma evergladei.
DESIGNATION: Coldwater, but can toleratetropical temperatures, particularly duringsummer.
GEOGRAPHICAL DISTRIBUTION: North America,from Carolina to Florida.
SIZE: Around 3.5 cm (1.4 in).
WATER PREFERENCES: Medium-hard to hard,alkaline water between 8-10°C (46-50°F)during winter, but considerably higher, e.g.15-25°C (59-77°F), in summer.
DIET: All foods. particularly livefoods.
BREEDING: Eggs are scattered among fine-leaved vegetation and hatch out in 3 or 4days.
DESCRIPTION: E. evergladei malesare quite aggressive, despite their small size.Dense clumps of vegetation should beprovided for this fish which should be kept ina species tank. i.e. not a community tank.Other Pigmy Sunfishes include: Black-banded Sunfish - Enneacanthus(Mesogonistius) chaetodon Diamond or Banded Sunfish -E. obess.Blue-spotted Sunfish -E. gloriosus
