SCIENTIFIC NAME: Betty splendens.
DESIGNATION: Tropical.
GEOGRAPHICAL DISTRIBUTION: Far East. Thereis also a report of a Colombian wild population which has established itself from afew escapees in the mid-1970s.
SIZE: Around 6 cm (2.5 in).
WATER PREFERENCES: Not critical.Temperature: 24-28°C (75-82°F).
DIET: All foods.
BREEDING: B. splendens is the classicbubblenester.
DESCRIPTION: Wild populationshave short fins while domesticated ones tendto have long, flowing finnage in the male. Awide range of colours is also available.The common name comes from the species'in-built pugnacity which has been exploitedin some Far Eastern countries where contestsbetween males are still held.
