Diet

Mouth of Silver Hatchetfish is situated up on top of its body. It is used to consume surface foods like small vinegar flies and mosquito larvae. Feed it with protein rich food everyday like fruit flies, brine shrimp (either live or frozen) and blood worms. This helps in maintaining a good balance.

Breeding

Silver Hatchetfish is an egg layer but there are no reports about successful breeding of this fish in captivity.

Physical Description

Body of Silver Hatchetfish is convex. Its ventral fins are small ones and its back is pretty straight. Its pectoral fins are wing-like and are transparent. They often measure up to half of the overall body size of this fish. Color of the body is from silver to white and the back is olive brown. Its body colors can change from iridescent green to iridescent blue depending on the angle of light. Its mouth is small and upturned. It grows as long as 3.5 inches or 9 cms.

Tank Set Up

Size of Tank of Silver Hatchetfish should be 28 inches or 71 cms. The tank should have the capacity to hold 75 liters or 20 gallons of water. The general hatchetfish set up is needed by this fish but it needs a good air supply as well. It needs soft and peaty water. Social Behavior

Silver Hatchetfish is a peaceful fish and makes a good community fish. You can comfortably keep this fish with fish of lower swimming levels. It is delighted in the group of 6 or more. When kept in a large group, it is less stressed thus, there are less chances of catching a disease by this fish.

Silver Hatchetfish is mainly a surface swimmer and feeder. It is wise to keep it in shoals. This fish is a very hardy one. As far as the sexual differences are concerned, they are very difficult to be told but if you see from above, the female is plumper. It is interesting to note that it leaps from the water and fly through the air and keeps flapping its big pectoral fins to catch flying insects. It is usually acknowledged for being the only ‘flying fish’ as it is the only fish that moves its pectoral fins to have assistance in its flight.
