Tri-Colour Shark

The term ‘shark’ is added to the name of Tri-Color Shark because of its appearance, a superficial resemblance of its dorsal fin to that of the unruly and predatory ocean fish. The life span of Tri-Color Shark is of ten years. It grows to the size of 35 cms or 14 inches. Its scientific name is Balantiocheilus melanopterus. Other common names of Tri-Color Shark are Silver Shark, Bala Shark, Shark Minnow and Malayan Shark. Geographical Distribution

Tri-Color Shark is found in Southeast Asia, Thailand, Malayan Peninsula, Sumatra and Borneo. It inhabits large and medium sized waterways such as lakes and rivers.

Diet

Tri-Color Shark is an omnivore. It usually eats all kinds of live, fresh, and flake foods. Feed it with a high quality flake food everyday to keep a good balance. It relishes the diet of brine shrimp (either live or frozen) or blood worms, daphnia, mosquito larvae and vegetable foods as well.

Breeding

About the breeding habit of the Tri-Color Shark very little is known. It is learnt that this fish is an egg scatterer. Repots say that it has been bred in the aquarium, but it is not yet bred commercially.

Physical description

Body of Tri-Color Shark is an elongated and slender one. Its body color is silver which is slightly darker towards the top and lighter towards the underbelly. The sides of its body have slight golden sheen. Its fins and tail have a white or golden area with a broad black edge. Its dorsal fin gave it the name of ‘shark’ as it is triangular and erected.

Tank Set Up

Tank of Tri-Color Shark must be big enough to hold at least 120 gallons of water. Though it is tolerant towards temperature and pH changes but the adequate temperature and pH required by this fish must not be ignored. Provide rocks, driftwood and densely planted spots in its tank. Keep the pH 6.0–8.0, hardness of water should be soft to medium and temperature required by this fish is 22 degree C to 28 degree C or 72 degree F to 82 degree F. Tri-Color Shark swims in all the regions or its tank. Though it can survive alone, it should be kept in groups of two or more specimens. It is an excellent jumper so carefully cover the aquarium.

Social behavior

Tri-Color Shark is not a real shark. It does not exhibit any of the true shark characteristics. Although it is imposing but it is not aggressive. It is a good community fish that does not prey upon smaller fish. It enjoys schooling with about 5 or so of its similar kind and so it needs lots of swimming space. Danios, Swordtails, Corydoras and Guppies make good tank mates with this fish.

Tri-Color Shark is lively and fun to watch. Properly covering the tank of Tri-Color Shark should never be taken for granted as this fish can jump up to six feet in the air. It is a playful fish and demands a large tank. It is also learnt that it makes audible sounds. This fish is easily available on account of its popularity.
