Goldfish Breeding

Goldfish BreedingAmongst the fish domesticated earlier, Goldfish is the one. As an aquarium fish, it is the one most commonly kept. If you are the one who is interested in breeding goldfish, you must know that it is not a child’s play. It asks for great patience, a plump purse and a spacious tank. If you are determined to breed a goldfish, then it is also not very difficult for you.

It is extremely difficult for a novice to sex Goldfish so to be sureyou have a pair, get several fish. If your fish are in a large pondwith plenty of cover and not too many predators, they willprobably breed without any help from you; however, if you want tobreed Goldfish in a tank you will need to maintain the water atbelow 11°C (60°F) throughout the winter and then warm it gradu-ally to 20°C (68°F) and in the spring start to feed your fish withplenty of livefood to bring them into breeding condition. Afterprolonged courtship the female will lay up to 10,000 eggs whichwill slowly sink and stick to aquatic plants, such as Myriophyllum.Remove the eggs on their plant or the fish will eat them. Keepthem at 21°C (70°F) for five to seven days and they should hatch, though at the first sign of fungus on the eggs - if they turn whiteand furry they are infected - get a bottle of methylene blue fromyour aquarist shop and add it according to the instructions. Feedthe fry on infusoria or Brine Shrimp and eventually a tiny fraction will grow up to become Goldfish.Losses are very high and do not be surprised when you find thatthe babies are not gold - the colour comes later.

Know-how for breeding goldfish :

Attaining sexual maturity by goldfish kept in overstocked tank is doubtful. An ample supply of water is required for the purpose. It may be 15 gallons per fish or even more than that. More space means more development of fish. For beginners, variety of goldfish to be bred should be decided.

Pairing and choosing the breeds :

Choosing high quality goldfish breeds the same quality of goldfish. You should select two or four year goldfish. Breeding with younger fish is advised as the older ones may produce infertile and deformed eggs. To start with, have one female and two males.

Breeding time for goldfish :

  1. Plan before a year in 7th /8th month when breeders sell their fish. If you miss, you will lose a good breeding pair.
  2. Help the fish to develop good body mass during winter, plan spawning in early spring.
  3. Clean the fish and separate males from females by 10th/11th month of the year.

Goldfish’s age for breeding :

Goldfish is mature enough to breed at the age of one year. If you want to follow an expert’s advice, allow the goldfish to attain the age of three years at least before you start with the breeding as it is the optimum age for the purpose. More than the required number of fish is chosen for breeding in order to compensate the fish which die. A day is chosen for breeding and preparations are started before eight weeks. Throughout these eight weeks fish are fed on live feed only.

Cleaning of breeding tank :

The breeding tank must be thoroughly cleaned to avoid contamination of any kind. After cleaning the tank is left for ten days to be dried. Once the fish is left into the tank to breed, gradually the temperature of water is raised to 2 degrees per day until it reaches to 20 degree centigrade. For successful goldfish breeding proper aeration and ample amount of light are necessary.

Final phase of goldfish breeding :

The female goldfish lays 500 to 1000 eggs in batches. The male fish sprays milt on these eggs and immediately they become fertile. These fertile eggs are shifted to another tank having temperature of 20 degree centigrade. To avoid pressure and help the fish fry swim freely the depth of water in the tank is kept 6 inches. In 4 to 7 days the eggs are hatched. The fish fry feeds on the full yoke sac which it already has, for 24 hrs. After that the fish fry swims up and searches for food.

Spotting goldfish spawning moments :

  1. Generally occurs early in the morning
  2. Fish will swim in group
  3. Colours will be more vibrant
  4. Male chasing female will push female till she ejects her eggs.
  5. Then male will deposit milt over eggs.
  6. Eggs land on plants till hatching.
  7. Out of eggs laid during one spawning, none will be left if parents are not removed to another tank as goldfish eat their eggs.

If you carefully breed your goldfish you will definitely have healthy fish fry and add to the number of your loved pets in your aquarium.
