Gold Fish Care

Gold fish is believed to be one of the most attractive fish from ages. Its golden hue and smallness increases its charm and makes it a popular choice for people. Gold fish is a hardy creature that can survive even in less than optimal conditions. But the fish owners should know about its care even if they own the common Gold fish. Here are a few tips for the care of Gold fish.

  1. Fish tank or Aquarium – Buy a large tank and fill at least 20 to 30 gallons of water for 2- 3 gold fish. Avoid bowls as they would keep the water less oxygenated. Get your tap water checked before filling it in the tank. Most tap water is safe but it sometimes has chlorine which may even kill the creature. Keep changing the water regularly to avoid harm to the fish.

  2. Light for Gold fish – Buy the Aquarium kits and hoods with florescent lights. Choosing florescent rather than incandescent light is better to save electricity and heat consumption.

  3. Filter in the Aquarium – Gold fish produces a lot of waste and fish waste produces ammonia which is toxic. Therefore a good filtration system should be provided especially biological filters.

  4. Gold fish food – The type and amount of the food one feeds to a Gold fish is of utmost importance. You can feed Gold fish on vegetables and meat. It is advisable to use the packaged food which can be bought from the market or online. If the Gold fish can not eat up most of the food in five minutes this means that the meal was pretty big. Do not over feed your Gold fish.

  5. Temperature for Gold fish - Taking care of the water is a part of taking care of the fish. Place heaters in the tank to keep the temperature stable for non fluctuation of the temperature of the water.

  6. Breeding Gold fish – It is not easy to breed Gold fish as it lays eggs in the water and it is prone to catch infections. The parent will give you no help either.

  7. Gold fish diseases – Gold fish diseases are preventable through tank or water management. The water should be changed on a regular basis to avoid illness amongst fish which if left unattended may turn fatal in future.

A good supply and change of water, quality food, taking good care of the aquarium and medication, in short following the above mentioned tips for the care of the gold fish would keep you and your “Goldie,” happy.
