If you are going to fit a hood with lights, then a cover will stop water splashing onto the electrical connections. Ac over also prevents fishes jumping out. Keep the cover clean so that the maximum light reaches the aquarium.
Leave the lights on for 12 hours a day to simulate tropical day length. Use a time switch to turn them on and off; remember that both fish and plants need a dark rest period. If your fish is salt water fish than for safe fish keeping add salt to the water, otherwise it will be hazardous for the fish if you will try to keep it in fresh water.
Never overpopulate the tank because each and every fish needs sufficient supply of oxygen otherwise they will not remain healthy.
