Parrot Fish Care
The parrot fish belongs to the specie of scaridae or scarus family. They can be seen mainly in the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean. Parrot fish are famous for forming a parrot-like beak with which they rasp algae from coral and rocky substrates. A parrot fish’s maximum size varies widely within the family; the majority of species reach 30 centimeters to 40 centimeters in length. A very few species, such as the bump head parrot fish, are much larger, up to 100 centimeters. Most species have different color, the females displaying drab tones of green, brown or gray, and the males a different, neon color. Do you own or want to own a parrot fish? Taking care of Parrot fish:
Food: Parrot fish are generally omnivores and feed on all kinds of live food that you provide it. To keep them healthy provide them with flakes and pellets and you can even give them brine, blood worms and shrimps occasionally. For more protein they can be provided with guppies and gold fish which is a good food for parrot fish.
Water Level: For the juveniles a 30 gallons tank will be a good choice. But for adults a 55gallons tank suits better. The parrot fish like slow to moderately moving water with an efficient and good filtration system. The water should be changed 20 -25% every week. If the water quality is not maintained well, diseases can spread in your beloved fish leading to its death. A common disease due to unclean water is Itch. This can be treated if you raise the temperature of the tank to 86F for 3 days.
Light: The parrot fish likes low or moderate light. You should not place bright lights in their tank. One can even place plants as they do not bother them.
Sexual difference: It is hard to tell between males and females in this specie yet male will can be seen with pink color around their throat. This can be used to tell the difference between their sexes.
Breeding: Mostly their eggs are infertile, so they should be paired with non- hybrid fish for efficient breeding of parrot fish.
Parrot fish have an amazing ability to change color and they have interchangeable mating pattern. Parrot fish care is not a very tough task. But taking care of your parrot fish would keep it healthy and increase its life span.
