How to Prepare a Saltwater Fish Tank

You are an absolute fan of saltwater fishes and want to bring them home in your aquarium but are afraid to set up a fish tank—because everybody says that maintaining a saltwater fish tank is a bit difficult. Well, if this is your problem then let me tell you it is not that difficult after all. If you have your basics clear then it is hardly any different from other tanks.

Setting up the saltwater fish tank:
  1. Clean the tank with fresh water and dry it with a soft cloth.
  2. Check the tank for any leaks.
  3. Put the stand at a proper place and check if it is level.
  4. Leave some clearance for electrical equipments and connections.
  5. Clean the plastic plants and rocks which you are using for decoration.
  6. Now install the filtration system and you MUST follow the manufacturer’s instructions for it.
  7. Put the washed gravel and add washed plants and rocks to it.
  8. In a large bucket take chlorinated water and add salt to it using hydrometer as it would specify how much salt is dissolved. Your range should be between 1.020-1.023.
  9. Now fill the tank with water and don’t forget to leave an inch space at the top.
  10. Start the filter system, heater and thermometer. The ideal temperature is between 75-80 degrees.
  11. These equipments should be on for 72 hrs.
  12. Now add the fish checking if the chemical levels are OK and the tank has suggested temperature.
  13. Water movement is a must in saltwater aquarium so pot for a small sized power head.
  14. Protein skimmer is useful in removing the debris from water before it converts into nitrates so get a protein skimmer cup for it and use.
  15. An air pump or an external water pump will be needed for protein skimmer.
Useful tips for maintaining the saltwater aquarium:
  1. Keep a notebook to keep the record of your activities like when you changed the water in the tank and other such procedures.
  2. Check the water temperature regularly.
  3. Remove any uneaten food.
  4. Evaporation of water is a natural process so keep the water level of your tank constant.
  5. Clean the protein skimmer cup regularly.
  6. Check if all the equipment is working properly.
  7. Clean the glass weekly for any salt build up in the tank .
  8. For the new tanks check the water salinity, ammonia, nitrates, nitrites, pH and specific gravity every week.
  9. In every two weeks replace the filter floss in the canister filters.
  10. Check all the tubing connections and assembled parts every month.
  11. Replace the lighting system and air valves in every six months.
  12. You will notice the growth of brown algae in the third week which might cover the entire area of the tank—it should be cleaned once a week and when you notice green algae it will soon wipe out the brown algae. If that does not happens, you can put additional lights for green algae to work.
So, you see that keeping a saltwater fish tank is not that difficult once you have set it up just follow the maintenance tips and watch your dear ones float in your house.
