South American Fish
South America is famous for its rainforests and a huge variety of fishes. South America’s climate and water is suitable for marine life. Thus we can find a large variety of fishes from the family of Cichlids to catfish and of course the notorious piranhas are some of the fishes found here. We have randomly selected some of the South American fish and discussed in detail their behavior, eating habits, physical description, suitable temperature and pH levels in case you want them for your aquarium.
Red Tailed Catfish: It is commonly found in Brazil, Guyana, Venezuela and Peru.
Its length is approx. 43.3 inches. The tail color may vary from red to pink to orange, there are black or grey spots on the head. It can be kept at the temperature of 21-26 C with a pH level of 6.5-7.5.
They should be fed moderately as overfeeding is the major cause of its death. It is capable of killing other tank fishes and is better kept alone. Breeding of this fish is impossible in tank.
Dwarf Cichlid: They are found in abundance throughout South America. Unlike most of the cichlids they are not fond of digging and are generally shy except when mating. The males can grow up to a maximum 12 cm. They can be kept in 25-29 C temperature, the pH levels vary from 5-7.5.They are ideal for community tanks but should not be kept with other non dwarf cichlids.
Spiny Catfish: It is also called Chocolate Raphael or milky cat fish. It is a native of Brazil, Peru and Colombia. It can grow up to 15 cm. It has large flat head with small eyes. It is an undemanding fish and can be kept with other species. Females are larger than males with a plumper body.
It is nocturnal and diets on algae. It digs up anything, use sand or gravel to prevent damage to their barbells. It can be kept at a temperature of 22-28 C with pH range of 6-7.
Big Eye Cichlid: It is found in the African lake Tanganyika. It can grow up to 2 inches and has a life span of 10 yrs. It is aggressive and would require sand, shells and clean water in its aquarium. It is better to put it in pairs if you have a smaller tank. It has a dark body with light stripes on neck and head.
Suitable temperature is 72-80F with pH level is in between 7.5-8.5.
Males are easily identified with their distinctive nuchal hump. It has a carnivorous diet but accepts flakes, pellet and frozen food also.
River Goby: It lives in the fresh waters of South America and can grow up to a size of 12 cm. The ideal temperature for this fish is 25-33C .It has dark stripes from eye to upper lip and dorsal fin with spots. It also has vertical bars or spots at caudal base.
