What Do Fish Eat

Feeding of the fish is a major part of pet care. For feeding the fish one must know what they eat. This mainly depends on their species. Knowing what your pet fish wants to eat can double the joy and satisfaction of keeping fish as a pet.

There is good commercial fish food available in the market. Other than this live food such as dried brine, shrimp, blood worms, tubifex worm provide variety. To keep the captive fish in good health their food should be enriched with vitamins, macro nutrients, and trace elements. There are different types of food for the fish such as prepared food, dried food, frozen food, medicated food, vacation food and live food.

Prepared food - The prepared food consists of the food made by the aquarists which is already in the form of consumption.

Dried food - The artificially manufactured fish food consumed by a large amount of fish and invertebrates. Dried food is available in the form of flakes pellets, and sticks etc. It is also bought in the form of tablets. This type of food is baked to do away the moisture from it.

Frozen food – frozen food for fish consists of mosquito larvae, tubiflex worms, blood worms, water fleas and brine shrimps.

Vacation food - Vacation food or the food blocs are kept in the aquarium to provide for the diet of the fish when the owner is absent. They release only a small quantity of food every day. They should not be used in regularity as they can pollute the water in the aquarium.

Medicated Fish food – It is a method to provide medication to the fish. It does not contaminate the water in the tank.

Live food – Live food consists of earth worms, sludge worms, feeder fish, larvae, brine shrimp and micro worms.

Healthy fish food mainly should consist of :
  1. Amino acids – for proteins
  2. Fats – for fatty acids
  3. Carbohydrates - for celluloses

It is important that the fish should not be over fed. The food residue will only spoil the quality of the water therefore the fish can be provided with several small meals instead of over feeding them. And take care that the food does not fall on the bottom of the tank. Taking substantial care about the diet of your fish, and knowing what do fish eat will keep them healthy and happy.
