Tap water contains salts of minerals, especially calcium and magnesium that make the water 'hard'. There are two types of water hardness: general, or permanent; and carbonate, or temporary, hardness. A popular scale used for hardness is ad, with3cc1H being considered soft and over 25’’DH as hard. To measure hardness use the relevant test kit, which usually involves adding drops of a colored liquid to a sample of water until there is a co lour change.
The only way to remove general hardness is to pass water through suitable softener. Carbonate hardness can be lowered partially by boiling and also by passing it through a filter with peat in it. Other ways of softening water include adding distilled water or clean rain water.
To harden water, add sodium bicarbonate or magnesium sulphate in small amounts so that changes occur very gradually! Remember that sudden changes can kill fish, although its very easy to increase the hardness of the water. If you want to measure the hardness of water just measure the quantity of minerals that are dissolved in the hard water. There are two scales available to measure the hardness water DH and KH. DH is used to measure the calcium oxide mineral present in the water. KH scale is used to measure the quantity of carbonate and bicarbonate salts present in the hard water.
To soften the water a good approach is just mix small amount of hard water with large amount of fresh water. It will dilute the hardness of the water and makes the water the soft. If you will make hard water soft it is very complex and pricey also. When you are converting hard water to the soft water in the existing aquarium just does it very slowly so that the fishes will not feel any change in their environment. Sudden change can draw unwanted result. Soft water decreases the clouding and sheet of an aquarium. Tropical fishes are safe in soft water. Actually soft water has no poisonous and unwanted effects on the fishes in the aquarium, but soft water doesn’t give friendly atmosphere to the reproduction of the tropical fish.
The rib, (Pelvic) is quite happy in a tank with plants and caves for cover and clean, very warm water. While breeding and defending its spawning site and young, this fish can become highly aggressive. At other times it is a good community fish, provided its tank mates are quite hardy. Hardness and softness of the water depends on the type of environment you want to give to your fishes.
