Grass for Horse Grazing

When the horse is brought in from grass after a period of rest, asimilar programme should be followed for the reverse process:

First week

Give a small daily feed in the field, perhaps 0.9kg (21b) of oats.

Prepare the stable.

Ensure that there are stocks of bedding, hay and short feed.

Check rugs, tack, clipping machine and first-aid cabinet.

Make an appointment to have him shod at the start of the third week.

Second Week

Continue to give the small daily feed in the field.ring him in at night and turn him out during the day.

Give a hay net at night.

Third Week

Bring him in full time.

Clip, and start grooming.

Have him shod.

Start slow work, walking only for half an hour ad ay at first.

Check that tack, especially the girth and saddle, is supple and not likely to rub the soft, fat horse.tart to build up the concentrates in the diet very slowly, reducing the hulk gradually as the concentrates increase.

Worm him.

Rasp teeth if necessary.

Check that tetanus antitoxin injection and influenza immunization are up to date.
