Horse Barns
Horses are very sensitive and easily get affected by a number of respiratory ailments resulting from moisture and polluted air. The best way to avoid consequences for your horse is to build a perfect and beautiful horse barn.
There are several ways to construct horse barns but it wholly depends on the ability of the owner to construct and maintain it. The barn should be safe for the horse, cost effective and functional for every day use.
The horse barns are classified in different ways which are described below:
- Box type:
They are the most common type of barns. The standard size of this type of barn is 10’ X 10’ to 12’ X 14’. These dimensions suit the normal riding horse. However one can make larger barns also, if he has enough space and money.
Standing type:
Standing Barns should be at least 4' to 5' wide, or wide enough for a horse to lie down contentedly. In the barns, there needs to be a rope tied to a powerful construction so that horses can’t get their legs over, but low enough for them to be able to reach their food and water. The walls should be 4.6’ high with a strong grill above so that horses can see one another. An enormous benefit of this barn is that it allows light and ventilation.
Ceilings:
The size of the horse barns wholly depends upon the height of a horse, though the average horse barns height is at least 8’. The barns ceiling should be high enough for a horse to raise its head without hitting the ceiling.
Things that are important to keep in mind when designing your barn are mentioned below:
- Flooring :
Floors of the barns require regular monitoring. One should have concrete flooring in their barns. It’s easy to wash and clean that type of floor and they are not even slippery.
But concrete is likely to be harsh for the horse’s legs and feet. One can over come that by placing rubber mats on it, which will provide a cushion to your horse.
- Doors:
The doors of barns should not be less than 4’ wide and 8’ high and can either be sliding or swinging. The doors shouldn’t open easily as it prevents horse escape.
- Light and windows
The light and windows are the essential equipments of the barn. Windows are necessary to allow proper ventilation and light. The windows of the barn should be covered with iron bars to prevent horses from breaking glass.
If using artificial light than put all switch board out of the barns or out of the reach of horses.
These tips will definitely help you to design a beautiful horse barn for your lovely horse.
