How to Treat a Horse with a Cold

The equine cold is very similar to the human cold. It starts with arise in temperature, lassitude and a runny nose, and is veryinfectious. Treatment consists of taking the patient off all work,and keeping him warm with plenty of fresh air but no draughts.He should he on a daily diet of warm, moist bran mashes. Thedoors and windows should be open once a day and he should bethoroughly groomed without being allowed to get cold.

The cold will run its course in about ten days, but a recoveryperiod of about a month is required to bring the horse graduallyback into work. The cold is usually accompanied by a cough. Noattempt should be made to bring the horse back into work whilsthe is still coughing. The symptoms can be relieved by applying anelectuary to the hack of the tongue or by steaming the horse'shead.
