Sweet Itch on Horse
An allergic condition foulsd in horses and ponies from June untilabout September, sweet itch is generally thought to be a reactionto the bite of a fly. The intense irritation causes the animal to rubits mane and tail, and unsightly, sore patches form. Theveterinary surgeon will prescribe a solution to relieve this
condition. Horses and ponies that suffer from sweet itch (sonicdo very much more than others) should, where possible, be keptin during the day and turned out at night during this period of theyear. This usually gives some protection from the flies; the use ofa strong fly repellent is also often helpful.
