Breeding Rats for Reptile Food

Breeding a rat for reptile food is a cheaper and a highly nutrition food for a reptile. Although breeding a rat requires dedication and time. Breeding a rat is not an intricate or tedious task to do. Since rats can achieve sexual maturity at 5 weeks of age therefore, it is essential to separate the sexes at this age. One can breed rat in any season but very cold or hot temperature can reduce the chances of breeding. Mice approaches menopause at about 18 months of age.

For breeding a rat one requires a huge rat collection and that should be adult enough so that they can involve in breeding procedure. Ensure that both the male and female are healthy before starting the breeding procedure. Male rats should not have the tendency for aggression. If you are breeding your rat second time then make sure that they are both physically and mentally prepared for this.

One can breed their rats by simply putting a couple together in a cage for ten days but make sure that they are together throughout two heat cycles. As there is a chance of fighting so one should put couple together only when the female is in heat. It is a good way to breed your rat as the couple has to be together only for one evening. Rat cage should be kept away from dogs and cats. The mating couple will repeatedly show up the certain cryptogram of being the ones. One can identify this by their mating play. A mating couple will show up the signs of being forceful, lip-locking and sniffing. Female rat will brace her legs stiffly, lift her head and tail, and pulsating her ears. This will help you to know that they are ready for mating. But you need to be vigilant in case one of them is over aggressive because in that case, it might hurt the other one.

The gestation period can vary from 21 to 23 days. It is significant for one to fulfill the essential needs of the rat before breeding them. Breeding rat requires nutritious diet, proper exercise and an appropriate cage. Breeding rat requires high fat diet therefore, you should offer them rabbit food, corn, or cheap dog food mixed with black sunflower seeds. The rat birth process usually takes an hour or two.

The new born rat can then be used as a feed for your reptile. It will be highly nutritious and healthy food for reptiles. Breeding a rat for reptile food will help you to cut down your reptile food expenditure.
