Build a Reptile Cage
Whenever you decide to build a reptile cage for your pets, a few things should be taken into consideration. Utility and purpose of the cage, the design and looks of the cage are some of them.
Utility of the reptile cage–
- Before we start constructing the cage, the most important thing to be considered is the kind of reptile that is to be kept in it; is it small like the anoles, geckos or is it as large as the komodo weighing 200 pounds.
- There should be enough space for the species that is to be kept in it.
- Proper levels of heat, temperature and humidity have to be maintained in the terrarium where these pets will be kept.
- The cage should be sturdy so that the reptile does not break it open as by doing so it will be exposed to lurking dangers.
- Some species like horned lizards burrow tunnels in soft and sandy soil to lay eggs and hibernate. Our cage should be able to satisfy all its requirements.
- If we decide to cage poisonous reptiles, then care should be taken that there is no risk to the owner. Thus the cage should be designed in a way that it fulfils the requirements of the reptile as well as the owner.
Pattern and design of the reptile cage –
- After knowing our requirements, we have the right insight needed to design the cage.
- The cage should be easily accessible so that it can be cleaned regularly.
- If the height of the cage does not allow easy access, the keeper will tend to neglect it. This will result in deteriorating conditions, which in turn will affect the health of the pet.
- It should be simple to look at, should suit your skills as well as limitations of craftsmanship, and should be of maximum utility.
Looks of the aesthetic part of the reptile cage –
- If the cage is just meant to be out of sight, it can be plain and simple, but must be well equipped with all the essentials required by the pet, like UV light, proper heating systems and hygrometers. But if you decide to keep the cage in your living room to display your pet to your friends and relatives, then it should be aesthetic. But it largely depends on the taste of the owner.
Before you start to build a cage, a few things need to be considered.
- How to provide the essentials in the cage? Where and how will you place the UV lamp, the hygrometer? You need to care that the heat stones provided by you do not burn the pets. As they have a thick and scaly skin, they might rest a bit too long and eventually kill them.
- How will you enclose the cage and what kind of bolts will you use, so that you can operate them conveniently?
- Ventilation and cleanliness is of utmost importance. The reptile cage should be properly ventilated. So if it is a glass cage, proper fixtures need to be attached to it to facilitate the needs of the animals to be caged.
Always remember that the reptile cage is your pet’s home. You should try and keep it as comfortable as possible for it.
