Buying An Iguana

Iguana is one of the most popular lizards to be kept as a pet. Iguana is a reptile which has to be properly taken care off. Selection and observation of reptile is basic step involved in buying an iguana. Other Things to be taken care off are skin cleanliness, damage to skin, burn on skin, dried part of face, swelling bump, various spots, thigh, jaws, cloudy eyes, bubble nose and open wounds on nose.

Important things to be considered while buying an iguana:

  1. Contact the reptile store or its breeder who sells iguana. Select the iguana which fits your requirement. Selecting a young iguana will be better. Selection of older iguanas can be done, if larger size of reptile is preferred.
  2. The muscles of iguana should be firm to touch. The head will be always directed up and it will move its tongue around smelling something. If reptile is domesticated then it also climbs on a hand that is holding it.
  3. Skin of the iguana should be clean. It should not contain any dirt on it. Dirt on skin indicates the possibilities of infection to iguana.
  4. Damages on skin like Scratches, scabs, traces of bites or other visible damage may lead to infection.
  5. Burn caused on skin is curable. Proper watch should be kept on that part of skin to know is it increasing or not.
  6. Dried part of skin around the wrinkles should be checked properly. The dried part on iguanas face can be a sign of disease.
  7. The visible or tangible swelling changes may indicate the sign of broken bone or its absence. However, due to malnutrition also, the skin of iguana gets swollen.
  8. Heavily swollen thigh and lower jaw on both sides denotes a metabolic bone diseases caused to iguana. If one thigh and limb are swollen then it can be a case of fracture.
  9. Dry or thin limb indicates the sign of dehydration, malnutrition or presence of parasites. Heavily wrinkled skin denotes the widespread infection in the body of iguana.
  10. A wet or cloudy eye indicates an infection in the eyes of iguana.
  11. Mucus or bubbles from nose denote a respiratory infection in the body of reptile. It would be a serious case, if the iguana produces poked sound while breathing.
  12. Yellowish or greening line is a sign of inflammation of mouth.

The above mentioned tips will surely help you while buying an iguana. Before Buying an iguana requires to have proper information about it. This will help you in purchasing the right and healthy iguana for your habitat.
