Cottonmouth Snake

Cottonmouth snake is more commonly known as a water moccasin snake. Cotton mouth snake is the most poisonous of all species. It is the most aggressive and bad tempered snake.

The native place of water moccasin snake is Florida, southeastern Alabama, and southern Georgia. It is commonly found in water or areas near water, like wetland areas, rivers or lakes. Water moccasin is very good at swimming.

Cottonmouth snake is referred with this name because it has a bright white lining in the mouth. Their linings are like a warning to one who goes close to it. They keep their mouth open when they feel insecure, which is one of its unique behaviors.

For King snakes, great blue herons, and large mouth bass, Cottonmouth snake is a good source of food. Cottonmouth snakes are scavengers as well as predators. They help in keeping water clean.

Physical features of cotton mouth snake: Cotton mouth snakes belong to the family of Viperidae. Cottonmouth snake are dark in color. It has a wide flat head which is wider than its neck. Average length of cottonmouth snake is about 30-72 inches.

Chin color is light cream. Color of cottonmouth snake varies from olive green to dark brown to jet black. It has unique facial pit between the eyes and nostrils.

Species of Cottonmouth snake: Other species of cotton mouth snake are the Northern Cotton mouth snake, the eastern Cotton mouth snake, and the Florida cottonmouth snake.

Cottonmouth snake Bite : Cotton mouth snake bite is very painful and very serious. However, death due to water Cottonmouth snakes is rare. Water moccasin produces its venom in glands close to jaws join. The poison of this snake is hemotoxic. It destroys blood cells of its prey, which prevents blood clotting. After the bite, the cottonmouth snake takes almost three weeks to resynthesize its venom.

Diet of Cottonmouth snake:Cotton mouth snakes likes to have a variety of food in their diet. Diet includes small snakes, fish, lizards, frogs, turtles, small birds, mammals, and alligators. They swallow the prey only when it is dead.

Species of Cottonmouth snake: Other species of cotton mouth snakes are the Northern Cotton mouth snake, the eastern Cotton mouth snake, and the Florida cottonmouth snake.

Mating and reproduction of Cottonmouth snake: Cottonmouth snakes mate in spring season. Males fight each other for the right to mate with the female. Female gives birth to 16 or more young live snakes. The egg hatches in the body of female and baby cottonmouth snake comes out. The baby cottonmouth snake is venomous from the time of their birth and can take care of themselves.
