Facts to Know About Pet Lizards
Now that you have decided to have a lizard for a pet, the next first thing that comes to your mind is which one can I have. Out of the 5000 exotic species of lizards, each prettier than the other, it becomes a difficult proposition.
They range from three inch burrowers to might Komodo dragons weighing 200 pounds.
No matter which kind of lizard you decide to have, a few facts need to be kept in mind. They are as follows:
- Always choose a pet which can be handled easily. If you are a beginner and ready to shell out some money for UV lights and heat stoves, which are a little expensive, then there is a variety of them from which you can take your pick. The blue tongue skink, the bearded dragon or an Anole would be the right choice. Children in their overexcitement tend to be rough with the pets. These lizards are generally tamed and not fussy about their food. They enjoy small mice, flowers, fruits, insects, moist dog food and vegetables.
- Avoid keeping species like chameleons, Nile monitors and Iguanas since looking after them is a challenging job.
- Whenever you decide to keep a pet, try to know more about it, by reading books, surfing the net, so that you get to know your pet well.
- All reptiles differ from each other. While snakes eat only once a week, lizards may even eat twice a day.
- Always take care that you do not leave any contaminated food in the vicinity of the lizard as it may make it sick.
- Never hold a lizard by its tail. It can cause a huge amount of discomfort. Always support it from underneath the belly.
- Some lizards which are active during the day need UV light. People usually keep their in glass containers and place them near the windows. But that doesn’t help as UV light is blocked by the glass in major.
- They need proper UV light and heat to maintain the temperature of the terrarium which is about 80 degree Fahrenheit.
- Lizards should always be provided with clean, fresh water. They prefer drinking from dishes as they love to soak themselves in it.
- Lizards need enough space to move around. So if you get decide to get 2 of them, then choose from the same species, preferably a male and a female.
Whenever you decide to buy a lizard for a pet, always make sure that once you’ve chosen to keep a pet, it is a life long commitment. You just can’t leave it in the wilderness, if by any chance you decide to abandon it for its size or expense. The reason is that even if you choose an inexpensive lizard, the paraphernalia required for it might turn out to be very expensive
Also make sure about the size of your lizard. Try getting a pet which will have a comfortable size as an adult and which is healthy.
