GOOD REPTILE PETS

Some people love having reptiles for pets. Once you’ve decided to have a pet reptile the next thing on the list is which one. Before you zero down to any particular species, always keep a few things in mind.

Size of the animal- Easy to handle reptiles are always a good option if you have kids or oldies at your place. When you have pets around, kids are bound to handle them. So always take care that you choose an average size reptile. Although as babies they may be small but when they become adults they may not be very easy to handle. So whenever you choose a reptile see that the adult reptile is also easy to handle.

Reptiles for beginners- Horned lizards, Anoles, Geckos, Bearded dragons belong to the smaller species. These lizards are basically docile in nature and can be easily tamed. They are fond of mice, insect’s vegetables and flowers.

Some species difficult to handle- some reptiles like the Nile monitors, Chameleons, Iguanas are very difficult to handle.

Some reptiles that are ideal for beginners are enumerated as follows-

Lizards: The most common pet lizard which pet shops often sell is Iguanas. Although this particular breed of lizards is not advisable as iguanas become aggressive by nature as they mature. But there are a few varieties of lizards which can be suitable for beginners.

Leopard Geckos: Leopard Geckos are ideal pets for beginners as they can be handled easily due to their size. They survive on insects which are easily available. Besides they can be kept in tanks of an average size.

Bearded Dragons: They need a tank of around 40 gallons, need high temperatures as they live in deserts. Proper UVA and UVB lights should be provided to them. Their diet consists of fruit and fresh vegetables and insects.

Snakes: Snakes are slightly difficult to manage because of their diet. They prefer whole mice or rats. But as they are fed only once a week it is not safe to leave a large number of rodents in their cage as they may hurt, bite or bruise the reptile if he is outnumbered. So it is advised to give them food which is just enough for one meal at a time.

Corn snakes: These snakes are docile and beautiful. The adult grows to about 3-5 feet and has a life span of about 10 years. Just ensure that you keep them in properly enclosed tanks.

Ball Pythons: These snakes can live for about 20 -30 years, are 3-5 feet in length and are fussy eaters.

Turtles: The concept of keeping turtles as ideal pets for children is now changing as Aquatic turtles are very big in size and create a lot of mess. After some time the children too lose interest in them. As they have a very long life span, they demand lot of dedication and commitment.

So after enumerating so many options all one needs to do is pick up the best one which can gel with surrounding needs. Great care must be taken while choosing a pet one has kids around.
