Make sure you have a huge soaking bowl kept in the enclosure so that no such issues arise. This is the basic need for the semi aquatic behavior of garter snakes.

This very docile specie of snakes is very safe and fun to handle. When handled, they feel delighted and show the same by acting in a strange manner. People often praise corn snakes when it comes to handling, but this is far better and safe specie to handle.

The garter snakes never show the tendency of staying curled and behaving as a passive mover. They are usually fast and mostly keep in line and stretched and therefore to handle them all one needs to do is a bit of coaxing and you are easily able to lift them.
