Things to consider before building iguana home
- Growth of iguana is very fast, so the size of the cage should be large. It is recommended to buy a bigger size cage for iguanas.
- Iguana enclosure should be spacious enough so that they can grow properly and healthily.
- Measure the humidity and temperature level of the home. Since Iguanas are cold-blooded reptile therefore, they require high humidity and temperature level in the cage. At the same time, one should ensure that it should not be too hot.
- Basking point is to be maintained around 85 -95 degree Fahrenheit in iguana home and air temperature should be maintained around 80 degree Fahrenheit.
- Different range of temperature should be maintained in different parts of iguana enclosure so that iguana can have its body temperature according to its comfort.
- Humidity level should be kept around 65 -75 degree Celsius in iguana home. A big bowl filled with water should be placed in the cage to regulate the temperature and humidity level.
- UVB and UVA light are very essential for the survival of iguana. Light helps in proper growth of iguana.
- UVB light helps in preparing D3 component in the body, which is very essential for iguana digestion. Iguana can have UV light directly through sun as well.
Building an iguana home/cage require lots of skills and patience. Following are the steps that one should follow in order to build a home for iguana.
Material required to built a cage/home:
- Lumber of about 2x2
- 20 L- shaped roofing brackets, which can fit on two-inch lumber.
- 3 set of hinges
- Slide Latch for each door
- Screening material
- Plastic roofing panel
- Oil drip pan or plastic for the bottom of cage
- Polyurethane coating
Building iguana home :
- According to requirement of cage, cut and measure the lumber. In general, you will need 20 pieces of lumber of each four feet long (16 for sides and 4 for bottom lifting of cage).
- Nail or screw the sides of the frame without overlapping the lumber. Coating the frames with polyurethane will have good reliability.
- Measure the inside dimensions of frames. Construct another frame for door. It is always preferable to leave 8 inches of space between doorframe and the outer frame.
- Corners of all the frames should be square shaped. Use L-strap on outsider corner and door frames to strengthen it. Flip the four frames in such a way that l-strap face downwards.
- Transparent screen should be put but not on door frame. Screening should be half inches bigger than frames. Staple gun used for screening should be straight. Screening should be stretched and stapled on the frame. Leave the frame to hold the door, which is uncovered but cover the door frame.
- Cut plastic roofing panel, so that it can fit on the top of cage. Screw the plastic roofing panel in the frames of cage
- Use spacer to hang the door. Door should be made hanged 18 inch towards the frame. Attach the hinges perfectly straight to door
- Attach the slide latch to door and frame
- Leave the cage for 48 hrs to dry before putting iguana in it
- Always be careful while adding light to the plastic roof panel. If the light gets too hot, it may result in burning of the panel and iguana too.
The above information will help you in building a home for iguana. Like every other creature iguana also requires home in order to feel comfortable and secure. Providing home to iguana pet will result in a long life of your pet.
