Iguana Disease

When we pet an iguana, we should try to prevent it from different diseases. There are many types of health problem/diseases from which iguana usually suffer. One should prevent iguana from these diseases as this can cause death of your pet iguana.

Some of the common iguana diseases:

Metabolic Bone disease in Iguana : Metabolic bone disease is one of the most common diseases found among Iguanas. This disease is caused due to gross malnutrition, when iguana is not fed properly.

The common signs of this disease are, lower jaw gets swollen which usually causes problem to iguana while eating food. Other common signs of this disease are lethargy, swollen limbs and tail. In such cases, iguana should be properly fed with a proper amount of nutritious diet.

Mouth rot in iguana : Mouth rot is another disease which is commonly found in Iguana. This disease is caused due to malnutrition. Malnutrition leads to weakness in iguana. The signs of mouth rot include increased salivation, swelling of mouth and accumulation of pus within the mouth of iguana.

Lizard should be provided with antibiotics, fluids, and vitamins to cure the problem of mouth rot.

Paralysis in iguana : Paralysis is also one of the common diseases that are found in iguanas. This problem occurs due to the deficiency of Vitamin B1. However, it is also caused due to the deficiency of calcium. To cure this disease, one should give injection of vitamin B to their pet iguana.

Blister Disease in Iguana : Blister disease is also one of the common diseases found in iguana. This disease is caused due to poor hygiene and sanitation condition. When exposed to bacteria condition for a very long period of time, then the bacteria causes blisters to develop on the body of iguana. If blisters are not treated on time, they spread all over the body of iguana. Blister disease can be cured by treating iguana with high efficiency antibiotics.

Gout Disease in Iguana : Gout disease in iguana occurs when they are fed with large quantity of animal protein. Gout is an incurable disease, so it’s better to prevent it. Reptiles suffering from this disease have a problem in digesting animal proteins. In this disease uric acid starts getting lodged in joint tissue of iguana. Improper diet is also the basic cause of gout disease in iguana.

Symptoms of gout disease are swollen and painful joints. Treatment of this disease is anti-inflammatory drugs.

Symptoms of disease in iguana :

1. When the iguana skin become dull or loose
2. When iguana starts hiding more often
3. A change in the behavior of iguana
4. Some times, iguana becomes aggressive in nature
5. Flicking tongue
6. Iguana also changes its body color when infected.
7. Eyes of the iguana get swollen
