Iguana Food

Iguana FoodIn order to let your iguana survive, you need to give it the right diet at the right time. Iguana food is not very expensive but there are some guidelines, which should be followed to provide your pet with a healthy diet.

There are many things, which should be included in the iguana diet such as vegetables, fruits, and breads. Food that should be offered to iguana should be chopped into small enough pieces, so that your iguana can swallow it easily. Iguanas rip and tear their food and swallow it as whole, so you should not feed big chunks of food to your iguana. You should feed your pet iguana as much they can eat.

The first crucial point to understand is what your pet iguana wants to eat. It can eat insects, animal’s proteins or packaged food. Make sure that the food you provide to your pet iguana is good for it. Iguana body is designed to digest only the simple plant proteins and will be healthy only when fed with vegetables or fruits.

If you feed your pet iguana with animal proteins in any forms such as insects, meat cuts, your pet will not be able to digest this food. The extra protein in these can result in kidney problems as the kidney takes extra effort to remove it from the blood stream. Some, chronic conditions can also be developed in your pet such as gout.

Water is equally important for your pet iguana. Iguanas need water; this is the reason why humidity is maintained in the iguana enclosure. A simple way to provide water to iguana is by feeding them with a moisten vegetables. A simple spraying of water on the vegetables at the time of feeding will prevent your pet from dehydration.

You should very well know that iguanas are herbivores, which means that they only eat vegetable, plants, and not meat. Following are the things, which every iguana owner should feed their iguana pet.

Vegetables:- Vegetable should make the large part of your iguana diet. Iguanas like to have dark green leafy vegetables. This iguana food includes parsley, dandelion greens, mustard greens and collard, and spinach. You can also provide them with carrots and squash. You can serve them fresh raw vegetables but make sure that you wash them properly before serving it to them.

Plant material:- In the wild environment, iguana feed on the plant material. Therefore, in the captive environment you should provide them dandelion leaves and flower. The other includes carnatuin flowers, rose petals, and hibiscus flowers. Make sure that the plant material that you provide to your pet iguana is not treated with a fertilizer and chemicals. Never feed your pet iguana with azaleas as they are toxic.

Fruits:- You can feed your pet iguana with fresh fruits. Fruit should be provided occasionally. The fruits such as apples, bananas, peaches, plums, and pears are good for iguana. Iguanas enjoy eating grapes, melon, and berries!

Make sure to feed your iguana with a balanced diet of vegetables, plants, and fruits. This will ensure healthy growth of your pet iguana. Your iguana will appreciate you, if provided with a balanced diet!
