Iguana health requires utmost care and attention. It is significant for one to fulfill basic requirements of their iguana in order to maintain its health.
Iguana health care tips
- Proper nutritional food: Iguanas should be provided with proper nutritional food. They are herbivores reptile therefore they prefer food like - kale, collards, arugula, watercress, turnip greens, mustard greens in their diet. Iguana also like to eat hibiscus flower and fruits like, grapes, cherry, mango, lemon, orange, strawberry, and cucumber.
Vitamin and mineral can also be supplemented in iguana’s diet. One should avoid feeding animal protein to their iguana.
- Proper hygienic conditions: Proper hygienic and sanitation condition in captive environment is necessary to be maintained. Iguana suffers from bacterial and fungal diseases due to unhygienic, fecal contamination, damp and filthy environment.
The direct exposure to bacterial and fungal condition in enclosure can increase the chances of disease to iguana. These diseases mostly occur due to unhygienic condition of the cage.
Substrate should be used in order to avoid these conditions. Newspaper should be laid down at the bottom of the cage.
- Trees and plants in enclosure :An enclosure should contain proper Arrangement of trees and plants on which iguana can climb. Climbing is very important for iguana. It helps in maintaining their metabolic system and strengthens their muscles.
- Heat source in enclosure: Proper amount of heat should be maintained in the enclosure. Iguana requires warm temperature in their habitat. Warm temperature will help in increasing metabolic rate of iguana.
- Proper UVA and UVB light: Proper UVA and UVB light should be maintained in enclosure. UV light should be provided to iguana through sunlight. UVB light is very essential for iguana since, it helps in maintaining vitamin D3 in their body. Vitamin D3 is used for digestion of food in iguana.
- Water in cage: Water is very essential for the growth of iguana. Iguanas need proper amount of water in their daily diet. Water is required for proper functioning of their body cells.
Water can be provided to them in tray or dish. It is recommended to keep the enclosure wet so that iguana can lap up the water from rocks or cage. Proper amount of moisture should be maintained in cage to avoid iguana skin from getting dry.
- Cage mate in cage: A cage mate is not advisable for iguanas since they are territorial. The addition of cage mate invites aggression and fighting between the iguanas.
- Prevent Common disease : Prevention of health problem is always better than cure. The most common diseases found in iguana are metabolic bone disease, Paralysis of rare legs, mouth rout, thermal injuries, blister disease, Abscesses, and parasite problem.
These diseases are caused due to gross malnutrition, burn, improper diet to iguana, improper hygienic conditions. To prevent the different types of disease in iguana, proper balanced diet should be provided. Proper balanced diet and well hygienic condition will help in eradicating the disease from the body of iguana.
