Pet Alligator

An alligator is a crocodilian. It is a member of Alligatoridae family. The two alligator species that are commonly found are - The American Alligator and the Chinese alligator.

Are you sure you want to keep alligator as a pet?

Think twice before stepping towards alligator as it is an adventurous task. To keep alligator as a pet can be very dangerous. They have bigger jaws, very sharp teeth, longer body, and are very mean. It can be very difficult to own and handle an alligator as a pet.

Requirements of pet alligator:

Housing requirement of alligator
  1. Alligator requires tank of minimum 52-55 gallons. Length and width of tank should be at least twice the size of alligator since it grows very quickly.
  2. Screen lid should be there in tank to exchange the air
  3. It requires both warmer and cooler area in their enclosure.
  4. Hiding space should be provided in the enclosure i.e. Rocks, wood. It is because Hiding in the enclosure decreases their stress level.
  5. Alligator likes climbing on trees. Therefore, Branches and trees should be provided in their enclosure to climb.
Lighting requirement
  1. Always use full spectrum, UVB light in the house of alligator, as it will provide good UV rays for the calcium absorption that is necessary for the digestion of their food.
  2. UVB light should be kept ‘ON’ in housing for at least 8-10 hrs a day.
Temperature requirement
  1. During day time, temperature of enclosure should be maintained around 75-85 degrees.
  2. Basking area should have temperature around 90-100 degrees.
  3. At night, temperature should be around 70-75 degrees.
  1. Humidity should be maintained around 55 % in the housing.
Food requirement
  1. Alligator should be feed with crickets, earthworms, and wax worms. This food contains high calcium, which is required by alligators
  2. Adult alligator should be fed once every alternate day.
  3. Baby alligator can be fed twice a day, since they require more amount of food for their growth.
Water requirement
  1. Shallow dish with fresh water should be provided to alligator in their enclosure.
Tips to legally own a pet Alligator
  1. Ask permission from wild life agency: To legally own a pet alligator, you should ask wild life agency whether keeping alligator as a pet is allowed in your residential area or not. Mostly an experienced and certified handler is allowed to pet an alligator.
  2. Design a proper house/enclosure : Alligator should have a proper space to live in. The enclosure must contain all the required things that an alligator requires to survive. Things such as - lighting, temperature, humidity, heat, proper cage size, food and water
  3. Inform neighbors about your pet alligator: It is very significant for one to inform their neighbor about their pet alligator. All the neighbors within the mile should be aware about your alligator. Make sure to tell all the children in your locality in order to avoid any serious attacks or bite.
  4. Purchase the alligator as pet: One should purchase alligator from a reputed breeder. Get all the necessary information related to your pet before purchasing it. One should have proper breeding information about their pet alligator. It is illegal to keep any wild reptile in a captive environment so make sure that you have followed all the rules and laws before taming alligator.
  5. Beware of pet alligator : It might be your dream or wish to keep alligator as pet, but never forget what the alligator is. Reptiles are not like your other pets i.e. cat or dog which cuddle up to you in night, they are very dangerous to keep as a pet. Accidents can happen anytime, so be attentive towards alligator while handling it.
