Pet Turtle Needs

If you are thinking of owning a turtle then you must know that there are several pet turtle needs. Owner should be aware of the needs of their pet turtle that are essential to be fulfilled in order to keep them comfortable and in good shape. Several things that are essential for turtles are – habitat, food, accessories, supplements, care, maintenance, health etc. Needs of pet turtle are essential to be fulfilled in order to make your pet turtle flourish. The basic pet turtle requirements are mentioned below:

Pet turtle needs:

  1. Habitat for pet turtle: The main requirement of pet turtle is proper habitat where it can rest and spend its whole day. Every turtle requires specific environment to survive. Semi aquatic turtles need habitat that is large enough like garden pond whereas aquatic turtles require usual habitat such as aquarium. It is a good idea to provide your turtle glass or plastic enclosure as it is impermeable and non – absorbent. Some turtle might require wood or acrylic habitat to survive. It is significant for one to provide proper habitat to their turtle according to its need. Turtle habitat requires regular maintenance and care as they are one of the messy creatures. Make sure that you change the water of your turtle’s habitat every 45 days. Also, try to feed them at some other place in order to keep their habitat clean. Proper attention should be paid on pet turtle needs.
  2. Food for turtle: Pet turtle requires fresh and healthy food in order to sustain their health. Different turtle require different feed in order to keep themselves healthy. For example, map turtle require animals in their diet whereas, river cooters prefer composed plants in their diet. One should consult their vet or pet store owner about the basic things like – which food to serve and how often to feed. It is a good idea to feed basic food such as – berries and leafy vegetables to herbivore turtle. Snails, small fish, live crickets and earthworms are necessary for carnivore turtle. You can purchase packaged food from any of the reptile pet store for your pet turtle in order to keep them healthy.
  3. Supplements for turtle: At times it is good to add supplements to your pet turtle’s diet. Flourishing you turtle’s diet with supplements such as - vitamins, calcium, phosphorous is essential in order to keep them healthy.
  4. Light for turtle: Turtles require proper lighting in their habitat in order to survive. UVA and UVB lights are significant for owner to provide in their turtle habitat as it helps in absorbing calcium properly. One should avoid direct sunlight in their pet turtle’s habitat as it can lead to algae growth.

The above mentioned needs of pet turtle are significant for owner to fulfill in order to sustain their pet turtle’s health. Pet turtle requires proper temperature to survive. One can keep the habitat of their pet turtle at 70 – 80 ° Fahrenheit. Pet turtle needs regular veterinary checkup in order to sustain its health.
