Red Iguana

Red IguanaIguana is considered the largest of the lizard families. However, red iguana is one of the rarest species of iguana family. Red iguana is mostly found in eastern and southern parts of Africa. Like other types of iguana, red iguanas also need special attention and care for proper growth.

Requirements of Red Iguana :

Proper enclosure: A red iguana should be provided with at least 30-35 gallons of water in the enclosure. Enclosure may vary in size, shapes, styles, and quality. It can be made of either wood or glass.
The base of the enclosure should be kept clean. One should Use newspaper to clean their reptile enclosure. Iguana should be kept away from sand, soil etc in the cage.
Shallow dish or tray should be provided to red iguana in the enclosure for drinking water and eating food. Food and water serving dishes should be regularly cleaned to avoid infection.
Enclosure should include some items like - trees, plants etc for iguana to climb. Other things which can be included in habitat are twigs, barks, and rocks.
Enclosure of red iguana must have warm temperature with a proper heater. Light is one of the most important requirements of iguana habitat. Humidity should be kept at high level in the cage.
Cage should be large in order to make iguanas feel comfortable. Large size cage will help iguana to grow quickly while small size cage restricts the growth of iguana.

Proper food : Red iguanas are herbivores creatures and can be fed with variety of plants, vegetables, fruits, etc. The balanced diet of iguana includes green leafy vegetables i.e. mustard greens, kale, escarole and spinach.
Red iguanas can be provided with other vegetables such as green peppers, squash, frozen mixed vegetable, green beans, and fruits like bananas, mangoes, cherries, grapes, papaya, and apples.
Diet of red iguanas must include proper amount of proteins, vitamins, minerals, and fats. The vegetables and fruits should be chopped nicely before feeding red iguana.

Proper amount of water : Water is essential for the proper growth of red iguana. It should be available all the time in your iguana’s enclosure.
Red iguanas also absorb water through the food they eat like- plants, vegetables, lapping water of leaves or wood, and rocks.
Owner should provide proper amount of water to their iguana in order to avoid dehydration in its body. The water serving bowl should be cleaned regularly. One should regularly change the water that they offer to their iguana in order to avoid bacterial infection.
Red Iguanas should be groomed properly. Bath is essential for iguanas as it helps in keeping iguanas clean and is one of the ways for iguanas to obtain water. One should organize their iguana’s bath at least 3 times a week. Some iguanas panic while bathing, so it should be done easily.

Handling red iguana : Iguanas should be handled cleverly. You can gently stroke iguana’s back and neck, and pick them up while training. While handling iguanas, extreme attention and care should be taken because they are aggressive in nature.
