Reptile Habitats
There are wide ranges of reptile habitats available in the market. Reptile habitat can be artificial or natural. It is important for one to consider following things before choosing the habitat for his reptile. One should not keep a reptile loose in their home as they can create havoc. Therefore, it is important for one to provide proper habitat to their pet reptiles.
Basic Requirements of reptile habitats:-
Environment: Reptiles are cold blooded creatures, so they need moderate humidity in their habitat.
Body heat maintenance: Reptile cannot create their own body heat. Therefore, their home should provide them a source of basking with cooler and warmer area to regulate their body temperature. This process is called as thermoregulation.
Habitat should have homely feeling: Your pet should feel secure and comfortable in its habitat. Reptile should have homely feeling there.
Things to consider while building reptile habitats:-
Cost: Initial cost that is required to set a habitat should be considered, then the cost of their requirements should be calculated. Cost of things such as -food, vet care, electricity charges and other vital needs of reptile should be calculated.
Size of reptile: Reptile cage should be large in size so that adult reptile can fit in. Reptile grows very quickly and adult reptile require large size habitat to fit in. Therefore, the cage should be larger in size.
Safety and cleanliness: Reptile habitat should be safe and have a tight-fitting lid because it helps in preventing serious injuries to the pet when they try to escape from habitat.
It is advisable to keep your reptile in clean habitat, and wash your hands after handling the reptile.
Light and Heating requirements:-
Light in Day time: UVA/UVB lights should be placed in your reptile habitat as it will help them to process calcium in their body. Proper light is very essential for reptile to digest their food.
Heating in day time: Create a basking area in the reptile habitat for 12 hrs. It should be maintained according to the requirements of your specie. It is used to maintain the temperature of the habitat.
Heating in night time: In night, heat should be provided in the reptile habitat. It can be provided through heat lamp in the habitat.
Humidity and temperature requirement in reptile habitat:
Humidity level and hiding area: The humidity level in the reptile habitats should be maintained around 45-65%. Hydrometer will help you to check the level of humidity in the habitat.
Water in the reptile habitat: Shallow dish with fresh water should be provided in the reptile habitat.
Temperature in the reptile habitat: During daytime, temperature should be maintained around 75-85 degrees Fahrenheit, while at night, it should be kept around 65-75 degree Fahrenheit. Basking point in the reptile habitat should be maintained around 90-115 degree F.
Ventilation in reptile habitat: Reptile habitat should be properly ventilated in order to allow fresh air inside the habitat.
Furnishing the reptile habitat:-
- Reptile habitat must have an appropriate size of glass or screen.
- Bedding should be properly done with coconut fiber bedding, reptile bark etc.
- Hiding areas like rock caves, hollow logs should be provided.
- You can use smooth flat rocks, natural or hollow logs or branches in order to maintain proper temperature in the basking area.
- Reptile habitat should contain Artificial or natural plants, branches, and trees.
- The accessories used in the habitat should not be toxic. The branches and trees should be safe and comfortable for reptile to use/climb.
Things required to set up a reptile habitat are :-
- Basking lamp
- UVA/UVB light
- Hydrometer and Thermometer for measuring temperature
- Artificial or natural climbing branches and trees
- Artificial or natural plants, trees
- Water and food dish
- Coconut fiber or calcium sand
- Proper size of home
- Hiding area
- Basking Spot
