Snake Care

Snakes are very sensitive and unusual as a pet. They require special care and attention toward them. Usually snakes are very loyal towards their owner. Before purchasing a snake one should be capable enough to take proper care of the snake.

Like other pets i.e. dog, cat, birds, fish etc snake also have some essential requirements. Care of snake involves .i.e. housing, temperature, humidity and food.

Care of snake:

  • Housing for snake:

The size of the enclosure depends on the size of the snake. Snakes that measures 6 feet long or less should be provided with at least half square foot of floor space enclosure.

Above 6 feet long snakes should be provided with three fourth of square foot of floor space. Snake should feel comfortable and secure, since they spend quite an amount of time in hiding and basking in the enclosure.

Snakes enjoy hiding a lot. Proper space should be provided to them in the enclosure for hiding. Snake enclosures should be of adequate space and size, properly ventilated, and easy to clean.

Furnishings in a snake cage should be in simple format without using any toxic material. The enclosure’s bottom floor should be properly leveled with aspen shavings, reptile carpet etc.

Proper leveling and using of substrate helps in cleaning the floor easily. Hiding place should be placed in the enclosure. It may include a cave, small plants, and various rocks. A shallow dish should be provided in the cage for the snake to soak water. It is always suggested to keep same species of snakes in a one cage.

  • Level of temperature in enclosure of snake:

Snakes are cold blooded. They need warm temperature around them in their habitat. There body temperature directly depends upon the level of temperature in the environment.

They do not have any system in the body for heating and cooling. They regulate their body temperature by moving around hot and cold areas in enclosure.

During the day, temperature in the snake enclosure should be maintained around 80-85 °F and in night around 60-75 °F.

A proper thermometer should be used to check the level of heat and cold in the enclosure. A heater in cage will help in maintaining a proper amount of heat level in the enclosure.

If the body temperature of snakes falls below the optimum level, it stops eating food.
  • Food for snake:

Snakes are carnivorous and feed with live or dead mammals, insects, eggs etc. Diet of snake differs from species to species. Smaller snake can eat mice and larger snakes prefer to have chickens and rabbits. While you pet a snake you should observe what your snake likes to eat, accordingly it should be feed.

  • Humidity level :

Humidity levels in the snake enclosure should be maintained around 40-75 percent.

  • Skin shedding of snake:

After every two or four months snake sheds its skin. Primarily the eye of the snake gets cloudy. When the skin of the snake is shed, the eyes become clear. Once the old skin gets loose from lips, shedding takes place easily within a very short period of about 3-4 minutes. Snake do not eat food in the period of skin shedding.

Proper care of snake will ensure you a happy and healthy life of your pet.
