Snake FoodOne should feed their snakes with proper amount of food at the right time. The food quality and quantity of snake food is totally dependent on the size of the snake. Some of the foods that one can provide to their pet snakes are mentioned below.

Type of snake food: Snakes are carnivores and like to have meat in their diet. Food such as - frozen rodents, mice are good for snakes. Dietary needs of snake are fulfilled from the digestive tracks of their prey.

Where to get snake food: Snake food is usually available in every pet store. Pet stores usually have food for many animals like snakes, alligators, turtles and frog. The online retailers also provide snake food like frozen rodents, mice.
Purchasing snake food online will be more convenient but not practical. Finding snake food in local shops will be a better option as it will help you to get better quality food according to your snake needs.

While placing order for snake food, you should consider several things in order to provide healthy food to your pet snake.

Things to be kept in mind while buying snake food –
  1. Always have a alternate source of food available
  2. Food should be clean
  3. Food should be reliable
  4. Food should be disease free
  5. Cost of snake food

Live and frozen snake food:-

Live Food for snake: This food contains live animals (mice or rodent) for snake to eat. Giving live food is the easiest way to feed snake.

Tips to feed live food to your snake:-

Remove the prey from cage: The favorite food of snake is rat. Snake mostly like to have live rat in their diet. If the snake is not able to kill and eat the prey within 30-40 minutes then you should remove it from the cage.

Monitor snake during feeding : You should be attentive while providing food to your snake in the cage. Since prey can bite your snake, therefore it is advisable not to keep them alone even for a single moment.

Give home to prey : If the snake does not eat that rodent or mice then it should be kept in home till the next feeding of your snake. The other way it can be used is by killing the prey and keeping it to freeze.

Pre-Killed snake food: Killing the prey just before providing your snake to eat is a good option. This method offers fresh food to your snake. It is one of the safest and easiest methods of providing food to snake.

For a smaller animal e.g. a mouse or rat you can pin its neck near to skull with the help of spoon or other similar things. Lift the animal on its back legs, as it will break animal’s neck. Your snake will like to eat this fresh food. You can also wrap and freeze that food.

Frozen/Thawed snake food:-

Snake food should be thawed before serving. You can keep it in snake’s room. The other method of melting snake’s food is putting it in warm water to speed up the process. Never use microwave or any other device for cooking snake’s food. After the food gets thawed, you can feed it to your snake

How often a snake should be fed:-

The average young adult snake should be fed at least twice in 1 or 1.5 weeks. Amount of Snake feeding is dependent on the sake requirements.

The above mentioned information will surely help you in knowing the availability and type of snake food which can be fed to your snake. It is significant for one to provide proper food to their snakes in order keep their snake healthy.
