Buying a Canary

Before buying a canary you should be well aware of the needs of the bird and proper care to maintain their health. Canary birds are of various types. So, before purchasing one you may research on the various canary types before selecting your ideal one. Canary birds are often messy in nature as a result of which you are required to keep its cage clean enough to avoid growth of microbes. Male canary birds are beautiful singers. So, if you are looking for a singing canary you must go for a male cock while purchase a hen canary in case you want no noise in your house.

The canary birds do not sing throughout the year with the same vigor. They sing mainly during the mating season while during the time of molting they mainly prefer to devote their energy in replacing fresh feathers. The following are the tips that you can take up while buying a canary.

Tips on Buying a Canary

  • Make sure of buying a healthy canary bird. Do not compromise on the status of the health of the bird. Select the bird which is active and is interested in his or her companions. Avoid buying the bird which is drowsy and lethargic in appearance or has un-kept feathers and with discharge around the nose, eye and under the tail feather. The presence of discharge in the feathers near the vent indicates either the bird has loose bowels or spends most of the time close to the ground, both of the symptoms relate to the bird being attacked with a disease.

  • You may go for a banded bird as you would then have a detailed account of the birth history and the ancestry of the bird. The banded birds are those that are born in aviaries of breeders. The legs of the birds are banded mentioning the name of the breeder and other related details. This process of banding the birds is done when they are just few weeks old. A grown up bird can not be banded. Even, every year the colors of the bands are changed to denote the age of the bird.

  • Check out the condition of the aviary from where you have bought the canary bird. If the breeders place is dirty avoid buying a canary from there as the bird would be carrying germs and parasites with it.

  • Always buy birds from a good breeder. You may search in the internet or may visit a local bird show from where you may get in contact with a good bird breeder.

  • Adult canaries are quite difficult to be tamed. So, make sure of buying a canary which is quite young in age.

The tips on maintaining a Canary bird

  • Canary birds are sensitive to environmental changes. You are recommended not to shift the location of the cage from one place to another.

  • The canary birds have the habit of splashing water or messing up by littering its food every where. You should go for a regular cleaning of the cage.

  • Use disinfectants and other antibacterial agents for washing purposes. But at the same time make sure that the birds are not affected by the disinfectants.

  • Birds need special care as the food and the water has to be altered with a fresh one every after two days. In fact, if you are planning for holiday break make sure of not extending it for more than two days. You may go for a longer holiday trip by arranging for an aviary shelter for the bird in a breeder’s house for the time being.

Go to a breeder who is quite popular. A good breeder would always find interest in answering questions that you would like to get at the time of buying a canary bird. Make sure the breeder provides you good service whenever you need his or her assistance for maintaining the health of the bird.
