Buying a Finch

Most bird lovers prefer to keep finch as their pet. Finches are birds that are available in great variety. They are of variant colors and fun to watch them. The birds that are called as finch are named by the scientists because of their similarity in physical appearance even they might belong to different bird family. The finches mainly have broad strong beak and are of small or medium sized birds. Buying a finch would be a great idea for pet owners as these birds are very quiet and easily manageable. They also produce beautiful song during the breeding season which would be great piece of entertainment for all your family members, young as well as old.

Make sure of buying a finch in pair. Finches stay best in an environment where it is kept with another companion. They hardly interact with human beings as a result of which they would feel lonely if they are kept alone. While making a decision on buying a finch make sure of making a commitment to take care of the bird as long as it lives. Finches live up to the age of 12 years as well if they are well kept.

Tips on Buying a Finch

The following are some tips that would help to buy a finch ideal for you to keep it as pet.

  • Before buying a finch at first arrange for a cage that would be ideal for your bird to stay in. The cage for a finch should not be very long in height but should be wide giving enough space for the bird to roll, move or fly from one side to another. Since finches are not very big in sized, a typical cage made for a bid bird will not be ideal for this specie of birds as your pet finch would then easily squeeze through the bars of the cage. The right cage for the finches is termed as flight cage.

Since finches prefer to fly inside the cage, provide them with a wide specious cage. If you have two finches make sure the cage where you have kept them should be at least 30 centers wide. For more number of finches the cage would be greater in size. In case you are unable to provide enough space you may increase the height of the cage. The birds would on their own find out their route of flight.

Be a keen observer. Keep a watch on the flight paths of the birds. They love to fly and they do not show interest in bird toys. To make their living more comfortable you may introduce some perches inside the cage. They would enjoy swinging on the perches.

  • Finches can be easily bred with ease. Buying a finch from a professional breeder would be quite a good idea. You will get to select your ideal one from a huge variety of finches. The breeder would also be able to give information related to the birth and behavioral habit of the bird unlike a pet shop owner.

  • No matter how exotic or how beautiful is the color of the bird; do not buy it if you find the bird to be sick. Buy a bird which is highly active and jolly in nature. Closely watch the brightness of the eyes and the feathers. Do not buy a finch which is messy in appearance.

Finches are basically seed eating birds. But they should be given right proportion of nutrients, vitamins and minerals to make them strong and healthy. In case you are buying a finch belonging to the breed that change color or molt feathers, it is best to purchase them in the breeding season or the molting season. This would help you to determine the sexes of the birds as well.
