Buying a Goat
Buying a goat to keep it as might apparently seem to be quite exciting, but it involves a lot of labor in maintaining a goat. A goat can turn out to be a good pet if you take care of it properly. There are a variety of goats and before buying a goat you should decide on the breed of goat you are willing to offer. You are recommended to go for a good deal of research work before choosing the ideal one for you.
Many purchase goat and rear it for its milk while some for meat and other for fur or wool. A special breed of goat named the Angola goat can be reared for a special kind of wool. Before making a decision on whether to keep a goat as a pet or not you may take a note of the following aspects related to goats care.
Caring for Goats
Buying a goat means arranging for a special pen for the goat. The pen should be washed at least for two times daily.
The goats attract flies if they are not properly cleaned. So, make sure of keeping your goat clean.
Generally, goats become very noisy, lonely and feel wretched if they stay alone. You are advised to keep at least two goats together to make their living a comfortable one.
A female is to be milked at least twice a day. The milk of a goat is slightly of different composition compared to that of cow milk. So, it would be ideal to drink goat milk if any of your family members are prone to allergies on drinking cow milk. The amount of goat milk produced in a day would be sufficient for your family to live on it.
Like dogs goats should also be given a fixed schedule for exercise. Especially, if you are keeping a goat for carrying out loads.
If you are not interested in breeding goats, make sure you castrate your goat from a professional veterinary clinic. A castrated goat would live long and stay emotionally happy as well.
Before buying goat make a decision from where you are willing to buy it. Avoid buying a goat from an auction house. Generally, the goats that are sent in the auction house for sale are sick and they are the ones whose owners want to get rid of the animals.
If you are trying out your hand in keeping a goat as your pet do not buy a buck. Maintaining a buck with other goats would lead to pet over population crisis. You will not be able to control the birth of young ones and the female goat would soon be suffering from malnutrition. If you are willing to buy a buck, you are advised to keep him in a separate quarter.
Do not buy a goat with horns. Even if they look beautiful in appearance the goats with horns can be of great threat for other goats that are living with it. Goats can make out human behavior well and if they sense an impending hostile situation they would not use their horn for self-defense.
Do not buy a goat that is not born in a domestic house hold. Wild goats are quite adamant and they can not easily be tamed.
If you are willing to buy a goat as a pet, you should purchase with wethers. It is always recommended that you buy the goat from a good breeding firm. Prior to buying a goat you must visit the firm where the goats are reared. From the herd select the goat that you find to be friendly and healthy in appearance.
