Tips on Buying Quail, Fowl and Pheasants

  • Go for a conditional purchase based on a veterinary check. The breeder is supposed to exchange the breed of the bird with another if the bird happens to be affected by disease that is either genetically transmitted or the result of poor upbringing while it was with the breeder.
  • You must keep a note of the hatch date, the number mentioned in the bands at the legs of the bird, the scientific name as well as the sex of the bird. Though rare but some birds can not be identified easily based on their physical appearance. Birds like pheasants are almost similar in appearance irrespective of the sex. So, you have to solely depend upon the breeder who can actually help you to determine the sex of a bird.
  • Also keep a note of the total amount that you have paid to the breeder while buying quail, fowl and pheasants. Even record the mode of monetary transaction that has been done in between you and the breeder.
  • There can be several other conditions of sale while buying quail, fowl and peasants. Keep a track of them. Also keep in mind what are the conditions for which the breeder has settled down for retuning the pet.
  • If you are keeping imported exotic specie of bird keep all the documents of purchase, transport and permits safe at one place. You would be requiring the documents when you wish to move the bird to some other place.
While buying quail, fowl and pheasants you are required to do a great deal of research work for knowing all the necessities required for maintaining them. Do not try to buy a bird which you seem to be affected by disease. Check the physical symptoms of healthy birds like bright eyes and shiny feather. Do not buy a bird which seems to be droopy and lethargic. Disheveled and unclean feathers indicate incidence of disease in the bird.
