Computerized Axial Technology

Computerized axial technology consists of a computerized axial tomography scan. It is commonly known as CAT scan or CT scan. It is an x-ray procedure which delivers x-ray images. It gives the three dimensional images of the internal organs and structures of the body.

This technology is used for human beings and to some extent in animals. It is used to define the various abnormal internal structures in the body. These images later are processed by a computer to produce cross-sectional pictures of the body. These recorded images are called as tomogram. Hence the name is given as computerized axial tomography.

Uses of CAT scan in animals
Previously, CAT scan for animals was not possible. Due to the advanced technology, the scan machines are designed for animals too. The machines have different technical settings for animals as their body structure is different from that of human beings.

CAT scans are performed to examine the internal structures of various parts of the body. The head, skull fractures, tumors and infections can be detected. In the spine, the bony structure of each vertebra can be defined. These scan methods are useful to measure the density of bone.

These computerized images are sharp, focused and three-dimensional. Many of these sharp structures are better differentiated than standard x-rays. CAT scans are also used for scanning chest to identify tumors, cysts or infections. The radiographic image produced is reconstructed from many images taken of the animal during scanning. These fine x-ray beams are sent through the body to the detectors. These detectors send the signals to a computer which processes the image.

With the help of the axial technology of the scans the abdomen scans can also be done. It is helpful in visualizing the liver, gallbladder, pancreas, spleen, aorta, kidneys, uterus and ovaries. The scans are used to verify the presence or absence of tumors, abnormal anatomy, changes of the body from trauma.

The technique in this axial technology used is painless and gives the accurate images of the body structure. It helps a radiologist in certain procedures such as, removal of internal body fluids for various tests, draining of abscesses which are deep inside the body.

This computerized axial technology is now widely used in animals, since the pet owners are ready to spare nothing when it comes to the health of the pet. While using the CT scan for animals, the doctors change the setting of the machine. It is because the size, the nature of their tissues is different from human beings.

These scans help the veterinarian to understand the chronic problems which the animal suffers. X-rays have limited access to the internal body structures. The animals that opt for CT scan generally have neurological disorders, behavior changes or walking problems.

Anesthesia is given to the animals before the procedure of a scan. Anesthesia is injected to keep the animal still for proper scan images. Computerized axial technology is now widely used in vet clinics. They are more beneficial than the x-ray machines due to the advanced technology. Most of the veterinarians opt for a CT scan of the animal if needed.
