Feeding a Monkey
Squirrels, Monkeys, marmosets make terrible pets and are definitely only for the experienced animal keeper. On top of that, in Britain they are classed as Dangerous Wild Animals according to the 1981 Act which means that anyone who keeps them will have to pay an annual license fee of about $725 per animal. In the United States, primates cannot be kept as pets.
Monkeys are social animals. They don’t like to live alone. They won’t survive if they are left alone. It is a very difficult task to satisfy them with the food items that are different from their natural food habits. It is also very difficult to know the behavior patterns of monkeys.
They change their behavior every time. So, it is very necessary to take proper care and provide right nutrition to them. They prefer to live in natural settings. Monkeys don’t prefer to stay with human beings. Interacting with humans doesn’t satisfy their urge of socializing. Hence, they are to be kept in groups.
Monkeys are mostly herbivorous. Don’t completely avoid giving them insects and meal worms. They can be occasionally fed with these food items for a change. The food habits also vary according to its species. Monkeys usually prefer natural food and fruits that are available in the forest.
Tips that can be used for feeding a Monkey are enlisted below:
- Provide them with ample supply of fresh water. Water could be supplied through pipes or a small pond made in the cage
- Monkeys should be fed two times in a day
- Food items such as monkey chow, vegetables, fruits, and biscuits can be given to them
- Avoid feeding a monkey with pet foods, biscuits, and chocolate
- Feed them with food stuffs such as monkey biscuits
- A Baby monkey could be fed using feeding bottles. Care should be taken to feed them on their stomach. Tilt them upwards slightly while feeding
- Cooked vegetables like potatoes, broccoli, and cucumbers could be given
- In order to decide the right amount of food to be fed, consider the weight and rate of metabolism of the monkey
- Avoid giving foods that have a high calorie content in it
- They could be occasionally fed with mealworms and insects
- Feed them in the fixed quantities. Don’t over feed them.
- They have the tendency to eat as much as food given to them. Preplan the quantity as per the size of the monkey and feed it accordingly
- Avoid giving them human foods such as sweets and deserts
Monkeys feed on whatever is supplied to them as food. It our primary aim to give them the right food items in required quantity. This would help them to live a long and healthy life. The behavior of monkeys varies and accordingly you have to take proper care of these animals. Try to give them variation in food and probably natural settings similar to forest.
Monkeys require variety in food items. You can opt for feeding a monkey with commercial primate diet. The primate diet could be mixed with boiled eggs, nuts, fruits, and cooked vegetables. There is another option of feeding a monkey with insects, seeds, and mealworms. You can add additional things in the food, such as sprinkle it with vitamins on the top of the food item.
Diet of spider monkeys mainly includes fruits and nuts. They opt for eating insects and honey when there is shortage of food. The prime feeding time of these monkeys include from early morning to 10 a.m. They have a very unique feeding pattern. The female monkey is responsible for the feeding of the group. If the availability of food is less, then one large group spreads into smaller groups to find food. They can be also fed with leaves of hibiscus, spinach, and maple.
