Feeding Baby Mice

Feeding Baby Mice Feeding baby mice is not difficult, but it is important to follow a specific diet. There are some homemade diets recommended by experts. One should stick to this diet information and make sure that the mouse gets a variety of fresh supplements of food. Be sure that the diet does not end up imbalanced. There are some commercial diets meant for mice that can cause harm in their nutritional level. For the pet mice owners a combination of good block and some fresh treats is the easiest way to provide a balanced diet.

Store food for mice

Look for a diet made especially for mice. A block (a large pellet) or pellet type diet is considered to be the best. Loose mixes served to mice can be very well balanced and complete diet. Be sure the rat eats everything from the mix.

Fresh food

Mice benefits from variety of vegetables, fruits and other fresh food that help to keep them healthy. While feeding baby mice, keep in mind that the serving sizes should be small. (a teaspoon or half inch cube). Avoid giving large amount of fruits, or vegetables because that may result into diarrhea. Here is the list of treats that can make baby mice happy and help them to grow healthier

Fruits: cherries, apples, strawberries, banana, other berries, melons and plums.

Vegetables: broccoli, peas, potatoes, cooked sweet potato, kale, parsley, carrot, bok Choy, squash.

Other feed

Cooked liver, other lean meats (cooked)
Whole wheat bread and pasta
Cooked beans including soya
Yogurt (especially with live cultures)
Brown rice
Unsweetened breakfast cereals
Small dog biscuits, mealworms
Some leftover from meals is fine in moderation, but avoid sugar syrups.
Special treats: whole nuts including almond, Brazil nuts, walnuts, and sunflower seeds. This feed should be given occasionally.

Feeding baby mice is not a difficult job to do. Provide the above mentioned food with good quality and appropriate quantity to keep mice healthy.

The one thing you should not feed to your mice is cheese. Mouse pellets or a mixture for gerbils will suit your mouse, and you can add very small quantities of fruit and vegetables. Some people find mice smelly - this is because the males produce a chemical compound containing acetamide which they use to mark their territory. Females do not do this but like all mice they urinate freely, so provided you only keep females and clean thecae regularly and do not feed too much greenwood, you ought not to have smelly mice.
