Canary Feeding

Canary owners who are keeping canary as a pet for the very first time are not aware of the varied diet that they need for best health. Buying good canary mixture from your pet shop is the easiest way of feeding your bird. Canaries like budgies are seedeaters and need mineral grit and they also appreciate some well-washed green food and fruit. Make sure that clean water is available to your bird at all times. The account below will bring each and every novice up to speed and be an advantage to your bird.

Feeding a Canary

Seeds form the primary food for a Canary. The seed mix you buy from pet store should be a major part of your pet canary’s diet. These seeds are smaller and of various varieties. Most of the stores have additional minerals and vitamins to provide a supplement to its diet. To maintain your canary in best of health, feed it extras that it requires.

Feed greens to your canary at least once in seven days. They are sensitive to any chemicals and fertilizer residue, so rinse well the greens before feeding it to canary. Fresh sprouted seeds are very advantageous to its health. Chickweed, watercress and shepherd’s purse are favorites of a canary. Mixed salad greens are also good choice. Feed it with bell pepper seeds and other pepper seeds. Grated carrots and apple slices are relished by canary.

Canary needs a protein rich diet. A good part of protein is eaten through the seeds, rest can be provided with mashed hardboiled egg. This diet will not only fulfill its protein requirements but also provides ample vitamins to it. You can find dry egg mix which you can give to your canary after moistening it.

Along with protein and vitamin, calcium is another need of Canaries. You can buy this in form of bird grit which is easily available at any pet store nearby that deals with birds. They should be given cuttlefish bone. Diaphanously ground, heat sterilized, chicken egg shells can also be given a canary to eat up.

Always keep in mind to remove any food that is left uneaten in its cage. Do not leave it in the cage. Spoiled greens or egg can make a healthy bird sick. They relish millet sprays and honey sticks.

Foods to Avoid for Canary

Avoid Avocado as it builds up in its organs and can be fatal. Avoid greens with high water content. Do not feed celery, onions, Chinese pea pods, tomato, mangoes, candy, mushrooms, cookies, caffeine, chocolate, salt, bread and cake.

Always place food for canary in feeding dishes or on a spike for greens and fruit. In this way it does not lay on the floor of the cage. It is quite easy to keep canaries healthy, even if you feed them chiefly on seeds. The tips given above about canary feeding will ensure that your bird is in best condition and health and while you are happy to have it as your pet, even she is happy to be your pet.
