Goat Breeding Goats are reared and kept at home as livestock. There are different types of breeds of goats. Before taking a decision for goat breeding, gather accurate information about the various breeds of goat. Based on the information collected, decide the breed that you are going to opt for breeding and take necessary steps. Medical examination and tests by a vet is required to confirm the health of the goats before breeding.

Goat breeding is usually done for two purposes. These two reasons are for business i.e. for meat and as a hobby. It requires ample patience and experience for breeding goats.

Goats seasonally attain the stage of polyestrous. The heating season for goats varies according to the temperatures and climate of particular region. In temperate region, period of heat for goats are attained all round the year. In other regions the heat period of goats is during the autumn season.

Usually the pregnancy of goats results in one baby goat. Sometimes in rare cases, it gives birth to two or many kids. It also varies according to the breed. Closely examine the doe for the signs of it getting into heat.

The common signs which signify that the doe is undergoing the heat cycle are frequent urination, discharge from the vagina, frequently wagging its tail, or eating less amount of food. This takes place after every twenty one days. The best time to breed your goats is the initial stages of these days.

Regularly monitor the does during pregnancy. It is highly recommended to go for cross- breeds to attain better results. Select the breed of goat based on your necessity of breeding. It may range from selling it for meat or for milk.

The decision to breed a goat is taken based on its weight. The basic weight requirement for goat is around seventy-five pounds. It also depends on the breed of the goat. It goes on heat for average three times during the autumn period. In some cases, the goats can breed anytime in a year. The conception period of goat is around one hundred and fifty days or five months.

Goats that are born in the autumn season could attain maturity during the next spring season. The duration of doe in a heat is for about twelve to thirty six hours.

Goat breeding can be done in two types. They are as follows:

  • Natural breeding
  • Artificial breeding

There are many advantages and disadvantages of these types of goat breeding. You can select any of these two methods. The natural breeding is commonly preferred as it is inexpensive and easy. This method is normally followed for many years.

Precautions to be taken for goat breeding are enlisted below:

  • Conduct a medical examination of both the goat and the doe before breeding
  • Check whether they are not overweight and ill before selecting them for breeding
  • Check for infections and treat them before breeding
  • Consult a vet about the medication and food to be given to them during this period
  • Give them sufficient food and medication as required during this period
  • Vaccinate them as per the vet’s recommendation before breeding
  • Take special care of the doe and the kid as they are prone to many harmful diseases
  • Avoid breeding goats that are related to each other. It may cause deformities in birth

Goat breeding requires a lot of time and patience. It may not be successful every time. Be prepared with the adequate knowledge and do the appropriate things required for breeding goats. Conduct various tests and examination of both the doe and the goat before breeding.
